Udupi: ‘Horekanike’ for Paryaya On Behalf of Christian Community Planned

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jan 12: Preparations are afoot to deliver Horekanike (consignment of vegetables, provisions etc for use during religious functions) to Paryaya festival this time on behalf of Christian community. In the current year’s Paryaya festival, Sode Mutt Swamiji, Sri Vishwavallabhateertha, is set to ascend Paryaya throne on January 18, and retain the sole right to perform puja to Lord Srikrishna for next two years from then.

A number of organizations, groups of people, and managements of temples, offer Horekanikes during Paryaya period. The district unit of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA) has envisaged the plan to deliver Horekanike on behalf of Christian fraternity, as per an initiative conceptualized by its chairman, Ronald Colaco. IFKCA had in the past, given donation for the renovation of Goddess Durgaparameshwari Temple in Kateel and various other temples in the state.

State convener of the organization, Denis D’Silva, is already in discussions on the preparations in respect of this plan. It is learnt that the Horekanike the organization plans to deliver will comprise about 25 vehicles.

IFKCA district president, Louis Lobo, revealed that the main aims of his organization are to protest whenever Christian community or its members face injustice, and strive to preserve communal harmony. He said that different organizations and individuals under IFKCA as well as Catholica Sabha have shown inclination to join hands in the above initiative. He stressed that the Horekanike from the community has nothing to do with the church.

If everything goes as per present plans, the Horekanike procession will start its journey from Govinda Kalyana Mantap here at 4 pm on January 13, it is learnt.

I am rather appalled by the caste based seating arrangement at the free meal service offered by Sri Krishna Temple (see report on Sanjevani Jan13, 2012 edition). There was a similar complaint before also. Brahmanas are no different than other when it comes to eating meal or other labour.

In high school we used to have mid-day meal (subsidised by the MaTa of course)without any differentiation to caste. Even Harijan boys used to sit next to Brahman boys for the meal. Clean up your act and talk of others.

The 8 MaTas of Udupi had vast land property donated to it by local rulers. This property was rented out to tenants on annual ‘geNi’ (rent) to farmers. It was a custum then to offer flowers/vegetables, rice etc during every paryaya occasion. The seers were called ‘somgoLL’ in KonkNi. This came to an end when Devraj Urs introduced ‘tiller is land owner’ system in Karnataka years ago (uLuvavane holadoDeya).
The MaTas also offered free meals everyday at Udupi temple and also provided subsedised midday meal at some schools (for a three course meal – rice-saaru, rice sambar, rice-majjige (butter-milk) it cost only 15 paise per student then (no caste barred) per meal!! (in 1960s) I do not know if this still is continued.

The Udupi AsTa MaTas (8 MaTa) were established by BrahmaNa sage Madhvacharya, who was born at Pajaka near Kunjaru Giri Temple. (Katapadi to Shirva road).

    Commendable act of service as
JESUS has commanded us to do. The power of love is far greater than
    our imagination.

Comments from Gopal Sherigar-Divakar-Bharath Kanchan Hosabettu-Jaimini P.B.-Anamia Sunji Polali-
    RP-Jeevan-Amin Bhoja-Aloks Nath etc
    were very inspiring. Politicians
will try to do everything to divide
the society, but we all irrespective of our religions or
    political affiliation must be
united and serve each other to
build bridges of peace and happiness in the community.

    John,

Do you know about a cat, who was too old to run after her prey, announced that she had given up eating rats ? The rats believed her and set out on a pilgrimage along, with she at the end of the queue.

Can you believe even today there people of the intelligence of the mice ? All those 11 clicked LIKE for you believed that you are really the protector of cows.

On the other hand, see, there is not one DISLIKE. Can you say who refrained from voting ? Never mind !

I will continue to find gems among pebbles I am not outsourcing the services yet !

It is indeed an appreciable gesture of Christans of Coastal Karnataka. Since the beginning they are peaceful community and always at the helm of affairs while serving the needy people. I am sure that whatever the status the Coastal people have today the major part is christian communities contribution towards education which put the impetus on growth of the entire region.
Once again I am deeply overwhelmed by their deed this time around hope that they will further contribute to maintain the serenity of our Coastal belt.

Great initiative by IFKCA. We strive for olden days of peace, harmony and unity to return where we were celebrating Diwali, Astami, Chowthi with our Hindu neighbours and they were sharing our joy during Christmas, Easter, Parish Feast etc. Well done Mr. Colaco. You are great and so are your views and ideas. God bless you.

    1. Paryaya system was established by Srim Madhwacharya and later modified by Vadhiraja Thirtha. As per that, mutts take over paryaya period of 2 yrs based on what Sri Vadhiraja has established nearly 800 yrs ago.

    2. Udupi Krishna is considered Anna Brahma. people are fed food here at any time of the year. Donations from devotees, philantrophits etc are made use for the same. Also there is a belief that Akshaya Patre donated by Sriman Madhwacharya will always ensure that food is avble in Krishna Mutt irrespective of what the situation is

Could some reader enlighten me on the following queries:
    1. How is the Paraya Swami chosen? Is it through election, consensus, lottery system?
    2. During my visit to Dr.T.A.Pai hospital at Udupi, I was told that free lunch and dinner is provided to all the patients and the visitors throughout the year and this comes from the Mutt. May I know which Mutt provides this food.
Thanks in advance and best wishes to the Paraya festival.
