Puttur, Jan 12: The sub-inspector (SI) of Uppinangady police station was earlier accused of intercepting a gang of hunters, when it was transporting meat after killing an elk last Thursday at the sanctuary near Periyashanti here, and then allowing the culprits to go unscathed. The incident has seen a fresh, uglier turn now.

It is now learnt that a complaint addressed to Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police has accused the SI concerned of using a gang of goons employed by him for such raids, instead of the police personnel. The complaint states that the said sub-inspector had accompanied four of his friends in a car during the above operation.

In a statement, Dakshina Kannada BJP unit secretary, Sanjeev Matandoor, said that he has complained to the western range inspector general of police and district superintendent of police, about popular belief prevalent in the region that the above sub-inspector has formed a team of youth with criminal background for operations during nights. He has urged the officers to conduct an in-depth investigation into this allegation.

Superintendent of police, Abhishek Goyal, said that his office has received complaint about allowing the traffickers of elk flesh go Scot free, and of operation with the help of a gang of individuals, against the SI in question. He said he has already instructed the assistant superintendent of police in Puttur to look into the matter and send a report on his findings. He added that further action will be initiated on the basis of the above report.
