Kasargod, Feb 22: In a tragic incident, a mother and her two-year-old child drowned in a pond near an areca plantation at Elkana, close to Ukkinadka, on Friday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Parameshwari (42) and her daughter Padmini (2), residents of Dattige Mule, Elkana. Parameshwari was the wife of Ishwar Naik.

According to reports, Parameshwari’s husband and son had left home in the morning to attend an event. When they returned in the evening, they found both the mother and child missing. A search was conducted in the vicinity, and their bodies were discovered in the pond.

Upon being alerted, locals rushed them to a hospital in Kasaragod, but they were declared dead on arrival. It is suspected that they might have fallen into the pond earlier in the day.

The circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear. However, it is suspected that the child may have accidentally slipped into the pond while playing. Seeing this, the mother might have jumped in to save her, but both drowned. Locals stated that Parameshwari did not know how to swim.

Badiadka police have registered a case of suspicious death and are investigating the incident.
