Udupi, Feb 26: The Centre for Kannada and Regional Languages, Department of Languages at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal, organised a seminar as part of a two-day celebration of International Mother Language Day (IMLD-2025) on February 22 at Sarvodaya Hall, old WGSHA Building, MAHE, Manipal.

Dr Purushotham Bilimale, chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority, delivered a lecture on innovative approaches to the study of classical Kannada literature. He emphasised that classical Kannada literature has its roots in folklore traditions and recommended a re-evaluation of the teaching, learning, and interpretation of ancient Kannada literature. He suggested that literature classes should incorporate methods of re-telling epics as practiced by the folk community.

Dr Bilimale screened audio and video recordings of folk performers reciting and performing classical literature. Dr Bilimale pointed out that, it is essential to connect the younger generation with old Kannada literature, as this will help them interpret the language and understand the culture of ancient times.

Prof Varadesh Hiregange, head of the Gandhiyan Centre for Philosophical Arts and Sciences, and Prof Rahul Putty, head of the Department of Languages, were present during the event.

Dr Prithviraj Kavathar, coordinator of the Centre for Kannada and Regional Languages, delivered the welcome address. Padigar Laxminarayana Upadhya recited verses from the "Pampa Bharatha" and "Sahasa Bheema Vijaya." Research scholar Padmasini Udyavar proposed the vote of thanks and Abhilasha S compered the event.
