Karwar, Jan 16: A person named Aftaj Ahmed Khan (35) from Bhatkal was arrested by the police while circulating fake currency notes in Yellapur town. As many as 75 fake notes of face value of Rs 1,000 each were confiscated from his possession.

Uttara Kannada district superintendent of police (SP), K T Balakrishna, said that during interrogation, Khan had revealed the name of main operative of fake currency racket as Syed Ahmed Mulla from Madina Colony in Bhatkal. He said the police suspect that a big racket has been operating in the state.

He added that Aftaj, along with Umesh and Manju from Haveri and Babu from Kundapur, had been sentenced to 25 months imprisonment in 2002 relating to circulation of fake currency notes.  “Aftaj says he bought Rs 75,000 worth of fake currency notes by paying Rs 20,000 to a person named Kumar from Bangalore. We have recovered 75 currency notes from his possession. Going by the fact that they bear different serial numbers, we suspect that the quantum of fake currency notes is quite huge,” he added.

The SP, along deputy superintendent of police, N D Birje, have begun investigation. The SP said that a high level investigation will soon be undertaken to conduct in-depth investigation into this racket.
