Guwahati, Mar 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the traditional Bodo dance form ‘Bagurumba’ will be showcased on a grand scale, with over 10,000 youths performing it in Guwahati this October.
After successfully promoting Bihu and Jhumoir on global platforms, the Assam government aims to bring Bagurumba to the world stage. “This October, more than 10,000 youths will perform Bagurumba together in Guwahati to popularise this exquisite Bodo dance form,” Sarma said.

The announcement follows the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, where over 7,500 artists from tea gardens performed the Jhumoir dance at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati. The event, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was widely appreciated.
Assam had previously set a Guinness World Record on April 14, 2023, for the largest-ever Bihu dance performance, with 11,304 dancers and drummers coming together in a historic display.
Bagurumba, often referred to as the ‘Dance of the Butterflies’, is an integral part of the Bodo community’s rich cultural heritage. Performed mainly by Bodo women during the Bwisagu festival, the dance symbolises harmony with nature. Dressed in traditional Dakhona and Jwmgra, the dancers move gracefully, mimicking the fluttering of butterflies.
With this mega performance planned for October, Assam continues to embrace and promote its diverse cultural roots, taking Bagurumba to a global audience while celebrating the vibrant traditions of the Bodo community.
