Udupi, Mar 20: The District Civil Committee, in association with Netra Jyothi Institution, celebrated the return of senior astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore after spending 286 days at the space station—far exceeding their initially scheduled eight-day mission. The event was held at Netra Jyothi Institution on March 20.
Hundreds of female students gathered at the college, holding portraits of Sunita Williams and extending their well wishes. The celebration included a grand fireworks display in front of the college, adding to the festive atmosphere.






Renowned physicist professor A P Bhat delivered an informative lecture on the challenges and technical difficulties faced during space missions. He also highlighted NASA's critical role in ensuring the astronauts' safe return. "This is a meaningful event, introducing students to such an inspiring personality. Sunita Williams must be honored for conducting experiments in space for 285 days," he said.
Dr Krishna Prasad, trustee of the Netra Jyothi Group of Institutions and medical director of Prasad Netralaya Group of Eye Hospitals, emphasized the significance of space exploration in scientific advancement. "The strength and willpower of Sunita Williams are commendable. Her health may have been affected, but she surprised the world. The lesson we learn is that determination leads to success. As she has roots in India, this is a proud moment for our country," he said.
The event was attended by leaders Krishna Moorthy Acharya and professor Dayanada, along with committee members, students, and college staff.
