Udupi, Mar 21: Congress leader Prasadraj Kanchan has expressed concern over the recent incident at Malpe port, emphasizing its economic significance and the need for a fair legal process.
Speaking to the media, Kanchan described the incident as unfortunate and highlighted that Malpe port plays a crucial role in Udupi’s economy, contributing nearly Rs 8,000 crore in business annually and directly or indirectly supporting over 20,000 livelihoods. He stated that legal action is the appropriate course if theft has occurred but refrained from direct involvement, citing the matter’s legal status.

"Many community leaders have discussed the issue with me, but as it is already in the legal domain, we find it difficult to intervene. We must abide by the court’s decision," he said.
However, Kanchan raised concerns over reports that some innocent individuals may have been arrested in connection with the case. He urged authorities to ensure that only those directly involved are held accountable while protecting innocent people from undue harassment.
Criticizing the local MLA’s response, Kanchan pointed out the lack of proper security measures at Malpe port, such as CCTV surveillance, and questioned the legislator’s commitment to addressing public grievances.
"The MLA has stated that there is no proper CCTV or security infrastructure in place. It is his responsibility to ensure these facilities are available. The people elected him with expectations, yet he has failed to deliver. Instead of making accusations, he should utilize the funds allocated to the fisheries department. If he finds it difficult to work under a different ruling party, he should resign," Kanchan asserted.
He further stated that the incident affects vulnerable communities, including fisherwomen and Dalits, whom he described as innocent and in need of protection. Criticizing the MLA for allegedly prioritizing personal interests, Kanchan noted that despite the seriousness of the incident, the legislator had yet to address it effectively in the assembly session.
"The chief minister has already issued a clear directive that action must be taken against the offenders. The Udupi MLA has a significant responsibility to uphold public trust and ensure justice. Instead, he seems more concerned about defending his associates and discussing unrelated matters like cockfight permissions," he added.
The incident, which occurred three days ago, continues to spark political and public debate, with calls for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the matter.
