Udupi, Mar 28: Udupi district commissioner has ordered stringent actions against the bull trawl and light fishing in the sea.
In a press note issued by Udupi district commissioner Dr Vidyakumari said, "The honorable high court of Karnataka has upheld the government of India's directive banning unscientific fishing methods such as bull trawling and light fishing along the coast. In response, the deputy commissioner of Udupi has issued an order strictly prohibiting these practices in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), both within and beyond territorial waters.
According to the order, bull trawling and pair trawling are now strictly prohibited in the Indian EEZ. Additionally, the use of artificial lights, including halogen lights, LED lights, fish light attractors, or any similar equipment for trawling, purse-seining, and gill netting operations, is banned. This prohibition extends to the installation, operation, or use of such devices on mechanized fishing vessels or motorized fishing crafts.
The directive is binding on all fishing vessels, including supporting, supply, and auxiliary vessels registered in the region. Any violation of this order will be considered a contempt of court and will attract strict legal action under section-3 of the Karnataka Marine Fishing (Regulation) Act-1986. Offenders will also face charges under the Karnataka Police Act, making it a cognizable offense."
The district administration has urged all fishermen to comply with the order and adopt sustainable and responsible fishing practices to protect marine resources and ensure the long-term well-being of the fishing community along the Udupi coast.
