Mangaluru, Mar 29: The long-pending highway development works connecting BC Road and NMPT (New Mangalore Port Trust) are set to commence soon, thanks to the persistent efforts of Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta. The tender process for the maintenance, resurfacing, and installation of safety measures on a total stretch of 37.42 km of national highways from Surathkal to BC Road is in its final stage, with work expected to begin shortly after the selection of the contractor.
The NMPT Road Company Limited (NMPRCL) had invited tenders two months ago for the repair, resurfacing, and maintenance of highways covering key routes such as Surathkal-Nanthoor, BC Road-Padil, and the bypass from Nanthoor Junction to Padil. The project, estimated at Rs 26.05 crore, saw participation from five companies, and the final selection process is underway. Once work begins, it is expected to significantly ease the movement of goods, facilitate smoother traffic flow, and enhance safety for commuters.

Under this project, a total of 11.084 km of roads, including stretches from Surathkal to APMC, Kuloor to AJ Hospital, and Nanthoor to Padil, will be resurfaced with asphalt. Additional works include clearing overgrown vegetation, maintenance of roadside spaces, and implementing necessary safety measures.
MP Capt Brijesh Chowta stated that the poor condition of these roads had posed serious challenges for freight carriers and regular commuters. With the tender process now in its final phase, the roads will soon be developed to ensure smoother and safer transportation. He emphasized that improved infrastructure will benefit freight movement and public transport while boosting Mangaluru’s economic activities.
He further expressed gratitude to union minister for road transport & highways, Nitin Gadkari, and ministry officials for their support in prioritizing these works. He highlighted that while the Modi-led government has focused on infrastructure development nationwide, funding constraints had previously delayed upgrades to these critical highways. Following his intervention and discussions with the ministry, the long-overdue road repairs are now set to begin, ensuring better connectivity for the port and the region.
