Pune, Apr 8: In a bid to strengthen the ecosystem for assistive technology in India, NITI Aayog will hold a one-day national workshop in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra on Wednesday, themed ‘Developing ecosystem for assistive technology in India.’
The workshop aims to bring together over 200 delegates, including senior officials from the Central and State Governments, international organisations, research institutions, startups and stakeholders from the assistive technology industry.
Assistive technology refers to tools devices, software, and equipment that empower people with disabilities, the elderly, and individuals with chronic health conditions to lead independent and improved lives.
Highlighting the urgent need for such technologies in India, NITI Aayog noted, “The growing number of persons with disabilities, ageing population, and chronic health conditions has made access to assistive technology critical. These innovations are essential for creating an inclusive and equitable society.”
With India's robust startup ecosystem and advances in technology, the country has the potential to emerge as a global hub for assistive tech manufacturing serving both domestic and international demand, the Aayog added.
The workshop will feature panel discussions on key themes such as improving access to assistive technology, state-level initiatives, manufacturing capabilities, and opportunities for global partnerships. It will also provide policy suggestions and help shape a comprehensive framework to support the development and accessibility of assistive technologies across India.
NITI Aayog emphasised that the deliberations will contribute to the mission of “leaving no one behind” and building a more inclusive society for all.
