Sullia, Jan 18: During the Bhoota Kola of Taravadu Daivas organized at the family of home of Chief Minister, D V Sadananda Gowda, on Tuesday, it is gathered that about 35 poultry birds were sacrificed.  CM’s mother and brothers live at the family home of Gowda in Devaragunda.

Some claimed that the sacrifice of birds in such a large numbers was a clear violation of legal provisions. They expressed surprise at the fact that the CM was witness to it.

Convener of Animal Care Trust, Suma Ramesh, opines that as per Karnataka Prevention of Ritual Sacrifices Act, no animals can be sacrificed in the name of the gods or in the premises of temples.

Well-known advocate from Mangalore, P P Hegde, feels that sacrifice of poultry birds does not tantamount to an offence, as they fall under the category of food habits. He adds that sacrifice of animals or birds which are included in the food practices cannot be termed as offence. At the same time, he revealed that the law has suggested against sacrificing of such living beings in a violent manner or in a way that gives rise to a sense of fear among others.
