Mangalore, Jan 19: “The system of governance, which came into being in the country because of the sacrifice and toil of thousands of people, has now been usurped by corrupt people, who are capable of sabotaging democracy. Hence, the youth should take up the responsibility of protecting democratic and constitutional fabric of the country and guide the country on the right path,” felt Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) chairman, Nadoja Justice Dr S R Nayak.

He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar on ‘Development Works in Dakshina Kannada District and ill-affects it has on human rights’. The seminar was held at Ravindra Kala Bhavan of University College, Hampankatta here, under the aegis of the department of humanities and Gandhi Study Centre of Mangalore University.

Nayak felt that the youth have become silent spectators because of the failure of their families to teach them to raise their voices against injustice during their childhoods. He laid added emphasis on the role youth need to play in the country, predicting that by 2020, a quarter of the youth population of the world will be in India, and that this youth power will decide the future of the world.  He felt that the concerned should not lose sight of their responsibility to conserve natural resources for the next generation, while implementing projects like Mangalore Special Economic Zone. He also advised policemen to punish the guilty in cases pertaining to moral policing.

Mangalore University vice chancellor, Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy, presided. University registrar, Prof K Chinnappa Gowda, was the chief guest. Director of Gandhi Study Centre, P L Dharma, introduced the guests. College principal, Dr Lakshminarayan Bhat, welcomed. Assistant professor, Dr Dayanand Naik, proposed vote of thanks.
