Udupi, Jan 20: Koraga Abhivruddi Sangagala Okkoota led a protest held in front of the office of the deputy commissioner at Manipal on Thursday January 19, condemning the failure of the district administration in curbing the scavenging of leftover food at the annual religious celebrations at the temple located in Inna village that comes under the limits of Karkala taluk.

The annual religious celebrations were held at the temple from Monday January 16 to Wednesday January 18.

Belman Koraga Abhivruddi Sangha presented a memorandum to Karkala Tahsildar against the social evil of scavenging leftover food at the temple. The Tahsildar instructed Padubidri police to take necessary action against the evil practice.  Tahsildar also convened a meeting with the local village council of Inna to stop the menace. However, the practice was carried out unhindered during the three-day Nemotsav in Inna village.

The protesters demanded the dismissal of Padubidri sub-inspector Mahadev Shetty and Inna gram panchayat development officer over their failure to curb the evil practice.

Okkoota leaders Babu Pangala, Susheela Kundapur, Sharada, Sanjeev Kodical, Harish, Gowri, Kumar Ashok, Gokuldas, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) MSW students were present on the occasion.

In a small way but very significantly, the down trodden, socially exploited group is awakening and demanding justice and protesting the social menace is really a goodnews. Our society will improve. Now nobody should say this is age old practice no harm intended etc.,
