New Delhi, Apr 27: In a fresh push for digital security, the government has issued a strong caution to citizens: avoid using public Wi-Fi for any financial or sensitive online tasks.

While free Wi-Fi at airports, cafés, and public spaces offers easy internet access, it also opens the door to serious cyber threats. According to experts, many public networks lack proper security measures, making it easy for hackers to intercept personal data.

To boost public awareness, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has released an advisory under its ongoing ‘Jaagrookta Diwas’ campaign. It warns users to steer clear of online banking, shopping, or entering personal information when connected to public Wi-Fi.

CERT-In explained that cybercriminals often exploit unsecured networks, leading to risks like data breaches, financial theft, and identity fraud. Even activities that seem harmless—like checking emails or logging into social media—could expose users to danger if the right precautions aren’t taken.

The advisory offers practical tips to stay protected:

• Avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading suspicious attachments.
• Create long, strong passwords for all your online accounts.
• Regularly back up important data to external storage devices.
• Use a trusted Virtual Private Network (VPN) for secure browsing.
• Turn off autofill features in web browsers to minimize exposure.

CERT-In, operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is India’s nodal agency for cybersecurity and incident response. Established under the Information Technology Act, 2000, it plays a key role in tracking cyber threats, issuing alerts, and coordinating nationwide responses to cybersecurity issues.

By following basic safety habits and staying alert, citizens can greatly reduce the risk of falling victim to online attacks—especially on public networks.
