Xiamen, May 5: China reaffirmed its badminton supremacy by capturing the 2025 Sudirman Cup, defeating South Korea 3-1 in a thrilling final on Sunday.

This marks China’s 14th title in the prestigious biennial mixed team event, first held in 1989, extending their record as the tournament's most successful nation. South Korea, a four-time winner, was unable to halt China’s dominance despite a spirited fight.

The final began with a tense mixed doubles clash, where China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping overcame South Korea’s Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung in a three-game battle, winning 21-16, 17-21, 21-15.

Reflecting on their win, Feng said, “We learned a lot from previous finals. I think I performed perfectly today, and Huang brought great energy.” His partner Huang echoed the sentiment, calling Feng “perfect” and praising his maturity during crucial points.

South Korea struck back in the women’s singles as world No. 1 An Se-young defeated China’s Wang Zhiyi 21-17, 21-16. A visibly emotional Wang admitted to nerves in her maiden Sudirman Cup final appearance and rued her unforced errors.

China regained the lead in the men’s singles, with Shi Yuqi delivering a dominant performance against Jeon Hyeok-jin, cruising to a 21-5, 21-5 victory.

“I remembered my tough match against him at the Thomas Cup, so I stayed focused from the start,” said Shi, pleased with his improving form.

The title was sealed in the women’s doubles, where Olympic silver medallists Tan Ning and Liu Shengshu defeated South Korea’s Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee, the world No. 3 pair, 21-14, 21-17 to clinch the decisive third point.

With this victory, China continues to be the undisputed powerhouse in world team badminton.
