Bengaluru, May 7: Amid heightened national security concerns following the recent terrorist attack in Kashmir, the Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services Department on Wednesday conducted a large-scale mock drill and public awareness drive, titled ‘Operation Abhyas’, in the Halasuru area of the city.
The drill simulated emergency scenarios, including civilian rescues, fire containment, and first aid procedures. Firefighters demonstrated the use of an aerial ladder vehicle to rescue people trapped in high-rise buildings and educated the public on safety protocols during emergencies, especially when sirens are sounded.
BJP MP Dr K Sudhakar, DGP Alok Mohan, fire and emergency services DGP Prashant Kumar Thakur, Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, home department secretary S Ravi, DIG Ravi D Channannavar and other top officials were in attendance.
Speaking on the occasion, Karnataka home minister Dr G Parameshwara highlighted the relevance of the exercise in the current context. “The recent Kashmir incident, where 26 innocent lives were lost, has left the nation in grief. Our armed forces have since carried out strikes on nine terrorist bases in Pakistan. But the fear of a possible war lingers. We must be ready for such a situation,” he cautioned.
He added that the Centre had directed all states to raise awareness about civil defence. “People must know how to protect themselves, help the injured, and maintain peace during crises. ‘Operation Abhyas’ is a step in that direction,” he said.
Critical zones such as Raichur, with its key power plant, Karwar's nuclear facility, and the tech and economic hub of Bengaluru have been identified for targeted preparedness. “In a war-like situation, timing is everything. Swift, coordinated response is essential,” he noted, urging fire and emergency personnel to conduct similar drills and awareness sessions in schools and colleges across the state.
