Blood shortage in Dakshina Kannada: NGOs, hospitals mobilize donation drives

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, May 15: Due to a severe shortage of blood in Dakshina Kannada (DK), several organizations and NGOs have stepped up to address the crisis by organizing blood donation drives.

The Wenlock District Hospital Blood Bank recently ran out of stock and issued an urgent appeal to the public to donate blood. Dr Sharath Kumar, Head of the Blood Bank at Wenlock Hospital, stated, "We require approximately 70 to 80 units of blood on a daily basis. Three days ago, we made an appeal for blood donations due to critically low reserves. Since then, more than 70 individuals have come forward to donate blood, which has been instrumental in partially replenishing our supply."

In response to the ongoing demand, multiple blood donation camps are being organized across the district. Today, a significant blood donation camp was conducted jointly by Wenlock Hospital, Lady Goschen Hospital, and the KMC Old Students’ Association. These efforts are expected to ease the shortage and ensure the timely availability of blood for patients in need.

Dr Sharath also emphasized the importance of regular blood donations and encouraged healthy individuals to consider donating blood at least once every three months to help maintain adequate reserves in local blood banks.
