Newcastle, May 15: In a heart-wrenching tragedy that shook the Newcastle community, a seven-year-old boy, Archie York, and 35-year-old Jason Laws lost their lives in an explosion caused by an illegal cannabis lab operating out of a residential flat. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of October 16, 2024, was the result of a dangerous drug operation involving butane gas, a highly flammable substance used in the production of cannabis concentrates.

According to The Metro, the explosion took place at Violet Close in Benwell, razing six homes, injuring six people, and displacing over 140 residents — many of whom are still unable to return.

Reece Galbraith, 33, the man behind the operation, was severely injured in the blast and has now been sentenced to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of manslaughter and multiple cannabis-related offences. The court learned that Galbraith had been producing cannabis extracts using butane, a method known to be volatile and prone to explosions.

Young Archie York, asleep in the flat above the drug lab, was killed instantly. His mother, Katherine Errington, and his seven-week-old brother, Finlay, were buried beneath debris and had to be pulled out by Archie’s father, Robbie York. In an emotional courtroom statement, Katherine described Archie as a child "cheeky, kind and full of life," denouncing Galbraith’s actions as "reckless, selfish and profit-driven."

Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith of Northumbria Police said,

"This is a truly devastating case which rocked our community and claimed the lives of two people, including young Archie who had so much to look forward to."

She expressed deep gratitude to the local community and support agencies for assisting in the complex investigation.

“The community rallied together in the face of this unthinkable tragedy,” she added.

Authorities have issued strong warnings against illegal drug manufacturing, particularly operations involving volatile chemicals like butane. Police are urging the public to report suspicious activities to help prevent such disasters from recurring.
