Berkeley, May 16: A resolution to recognize October as Hindu Heritage Month at UC Berkeley was voted down by the student government, triggering outrage from Hindu students and advocacy groups.
The apolitical resolution, aimed at celebrating Hindu contributions to American society, was opposed by some senators over fears it could “legitimize Hindu nationalism” a claim not reflected in the text. Critics called the move discriminatory, accusing the student body of ‘Hinduphobia’ and double standards, as similar heritage recognitions for other communities have passed without resistance.
The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) slammed the proceedings, citing public bullying and bias during the debate. A video showing a student making a choking gesture during the discussion has gone viral, further fueling anger. The video was later taken down temporarily, prompting accusations of political censorship.
Hindu students said they felt unfairly targeted. “We just wanted to celebrate our heritage,” one student said. Advocacy groups are now calling for an apology, investigation, and equal respect for all communities on campus.
