Shanghai, May 25: British racer Jake Hughes of Maserati MSG Racing is gearing up with optimism as the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix double-header approaches, hoping to capitalize on "positive signs" after a difficult outing in Tokyo earlier this month.
Though this Formula E season hasn't unfolded ideally for the 30-year-old, Hughes remains focused on potential redemption at a track where he previously tasted success. In last year’s Shanghai E-Prix, he earned a second-place podium finish while racing for NEOM McLaren—a memory that now fuels his confidence in Maserati colors.
In the 2024 season, Jake Hughes has competed in 40 Formula E races, securing two podium finishes, including a commendable performance at the Jeddah E-Prix earlier this year. Hughes currently ranks 15th in the Driver Standings with 27 points.
His campaign started on a promising note:
• 10th place in Mexico (Round 2)
• 5th place in Jeddah (Round 3)
• Podium finish in Jeddah (Round 4)
However, consistency has eluded him. The Tokyo E-Prix double header proved particularly disappointing, with Hughes finishing last in both Round 8 and Round 9. Rain played a decisive role in Round 8, where starting grid positions were set by free practice results due to difficult track conditions.
Despite the dip in performance, Hughes took to Instagram to reflect:
“Japan was a rough one. Fast in all practice sessions but qualifying really curtailed our whole weekend. But some positive signs at least that will hopefully be turning our season around very shortly.”
The official Formula E Instagram account buoyed his spirits with a motivational comment:
“Onto Shanghai” ??
With memories of his Shanghai podium still fresh and a supportive new team behind him, Jake Hughes aims to turn the tide and claw his way up the standings. He also shared his enthusiasm online with striking photos of his Maserati MSG livery on a wet Tokyo circuit, captioning humorously:
“Wetter than a pocket full of Otters.”
As the Formula E caravan now heads to China, Hughes and Maserati MSG will be hoping the Shanghai streets offer redemption and results.
The Shanghai E-Prix double header promises fast-paced action and could be a defining chapter in Hughes's season revival.
