Washington, Jun 4: In a dramatic political twist, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has launched a scathing attack on US President Donald Trump’s proposed “big, beautiful bill”, labelling it a “disgusting abomination” and warning that it will push America into a debt spiral. Once a major financial backer of Trump, Musk has now emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the bill, calling on voters to oust lawmakers who support it.
The legislation, which recently passed the US House of Representatives and is awaiting Senate debate, proposes a sweeping package of tax cuts and spending shifts. While it promises economic relief to working-class Americans, it also outlines drastic funding reductions for Medicaid, food assistance, and green energy subsidies—the very incentives that have helped Musk’s Tesla and other clean-tech ventures thrive.
Musk, in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), lambasted the bill’s fiscal irresponsibility.
“It will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden American citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt,” Musk wrote.
He accused Republican lawmakers of betraying the public interest, saying:
“Shame on those who voted for it. You know you did wrong.”
One of the bill’s most controversial provisions includes a $350 billion allocation for border security and deportations, a longtime Republican priority. However, this increased security spending comes at the cost of slashed investments in electric vehicles and sustainability, prompting Musk’s outrage.
Musk also voiced frustration in a CBS interview, saying:
“I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not decreases it. I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful—I don't know if it could be both.”
Economists and the Congressional Budget Office warn that the bill could add between $2.3 trillion and $5 trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. This projection has intensified bipartisan concerns, even as the White House remains firm.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, brushing aside Musk’s disapproval, reiterated Trump’s stance:
“This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it.”
Meanwhile, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky echoed Musk’s concerns, stating:
“We have both seen the massive waste in government spending and we know another $5 trillion in debt is a huge mistake.”
Trump, however, dismissed Paul’s criticism with his characteristic flair:
“Rand votes NO on everything... His ideas are actually crazy (losers!). This is a BIG GROWTH BILL!”
As the bill inches closer to a Senate vote, the growing divide within the Republican camp—and the dramatic fallout between Musk and Trump—adds another layer of uncertainty to America’s already polarized fiscal policy debate.
