Trump’s Iran travel ban sparks outrage, mixed reactions in Tehran

Tehran, Jun 6: A fresh US travel ban on Iranians imposed by President Donald Trump has triggered a wave of frustration and anger in Iran, with citizens calling it unfair to punish an entire nation over political differences.

Trump, who had previously enforced a similar travel restriction during his first term, reinstated the ban amid faltering efforts to renegotiate a nuclear deal with Tehran. The decision has dampened public mood in Iran, despite earlier hopes for improved ties following his return to the White House.

“Now I understand that Trump is against all Iranians, and his attitude is not limited to the government,” said Asghar Nejati, a 31-year-old pharmacist in Tehran.

Critics say the ban undermines educational and familial ties. Roughly 10,000 Iranian students studied in the US annually between 2018 and 2024, and nearly a million Iranians are estimated to live in the US.

“This is another foolish decision. The two nations can have better relations through openings, not restrictions,” said graphic designer Mehrnoush Alipour.

Some citizens linked Trump’s action to his broader global frustrations. “Trump just expressed his anger about his failed plans,” said bank teller Mahdieh Naderi, referring to the Israel-Hamas and Russia-Ukraine conflicts.

Others pointed out hypocrisy. “It would be very nice if he also kicks out the children of officials who live there,” said Mehdi, a Tehran resident.

While interest in the US as a destination has waned with many young Iranians choosing Canada or Gulf countries some, like 75-year-old Mohammad Ali Niaraki, note that Iranians are exploring new avenues for immigration.

Amid criticism, a few offered rare support. “A bunch of bad people and terrorists want to go there as well,” said Mehri Soltani. “So his policy is correct.”

The move has further strained already tense US - Iran relations, even as Trump insists he seeks a deal with Iran’s people, not its government.
