Los Angeles, Jun 8: U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to “crush rioters” in Los Angeles following days of unrest sparked by widespread federal immigration raids. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom has fiercely criticized the federal government’s decision to take control of the California National Guard and deploy 2,000 troops to the city, calling it a politically motivated stunt aimed at provoking violence.
“If Governor Gavin ‘Newscum’ of California and Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles can’t do their jobs—which everyone knows they can’t—then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem: RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!” Trump posted on social media.
The federal move, which effectively wrests operational control of the California National Guard from the state government, was immediately condemned by Newsom, who called it both dangerous and inflammatory.
In a strongly worded statement posted on X, Newsom wrote:
“The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles—not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don’t give them one. Never use violence. Speak out peacefully.”
He also warned that the deployment would only worsen tensions on the ground:
“This is a purposefully inflammatory move that will escalate tensions. LA authorities already have the law enforcement support they need and can request additional resources at a moment’s notice. The Guard has been serving LA well throughout recovery. This is the wrong mission and will erode public trust.”
Newsom also criticised the federal immigration raids, calling them chaotic and reckless:
“As the federal government conducts chaotic immigration sweeps across the country, the state is deploying additional CHP officers to maintain safety on LA highways. It’s not their job to assist in federal immigration enforcement. The federal government is sowing chaos to justify escalation. That is not the way a civilised country behaves.”
The protests began in response to large-scale federal immigration operations targeting undocumented residents in multiple Los Angeles neighborhoods. Civil rights groups and immigrant advocates have denounced the raids as racially charged and unnecessarily aggressive.
So far, dozens of protesters have been arrested, with reports of injuries emerging after clashes with federal agents. Local officials maintain that there is no shortage of law enforcement resources in the city and argue that federal intervention is both unnecessary and inflammatory.
