Panaji, Jun 19: Goa has shown a steady rise in its school education performance, moving up from the ‘Akanshi-1’ category to the ‘Prachesta-3’ tier in the Union Ministry of Education’s latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) for the years 2022-23 and 2023-24.

With a score now in the 581–640 range out of 1,000 points, Goa has joined nine other states in the second-best achievement bracket. In comparison, the state had scored in the 521–580 range in 2021–22. Its score further rose from 581 in 2022–23 to 589.7 in 2023–24.

The PGI annually assesses the quality of school education across the country. While no state has reached the top four levels — Daksh, Utkarsh, Atti-Uttam, or Uttam — Chandigarh leads nationally in the Prachesta-1 category with a score of 701–760.

Goa performed strongly in domains such as equity (223 out of 260), infrastructure, access, and governance processes. However, its learning outcomes remain a concern, with a score of just 61.4 out of 240 — a reflection of earlier underperformance in subjects like mathematics and science in the National Achievement Survey.

The PGI aims to motivate states and Union Territories to adopt best practices and strengthen interventions for better education outcomes.
