Two more held for ‘anti-Hindu’ posts after Pahalgam attack; total arrests at 97

Guwahati, Jun 23: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that two more individuals have been arrested from Tinsukia and Nagaon districts for allegedly making "anti-Hindu" remarks, taking the total number of arrests in connection with the Pahalgam terror aftermath to 97.

“Crackdown on anti-Hindu elements continues... 97 anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now,” Sarma wrote in a post on X.

The person arrested in Tinsukia had reportedly shared objectionable content about Hinduism on social media, while the accused from Nagaon allegedly made derogatory comments about Lord Ram, Sarma stated.

The arrests come amid heightened tensions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of them tourists. The incident has triggered a sweeping crackdown across Assam on individuals accused of making provocative or sympathetic statements related to Pakistan or terrorism.

Earlier, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam was arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan’s role in the attack. Although he was granted bail, he was later detained under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

On May 2, CM Sarma issued a stern warning during a campaign speech, saying those chanting "Pakistan Zindabad" slogans would have their legs broken. He also called on people to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Army in bringing Pakistani terrorists to justice wherever they may be hiding.

The state continues to maintain high alert as investigations and arrests linked to the Pahalgam attack remain ongoing.
