Tehran, Jun 24: Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated dramatically overnight as Iranian state television reported the killing of nuclear scientist Mohammad Reza Seddighi Saber in an alleged Israeli airstrike in northern Iran. The strike occurred at Saber's parents' residence in Astaneh-ye Ashrafiyeh, marking a significant development amid ongoing regional hostilities.
Saber, who was reportedly under US sanctions, is the latest in a string of Iranian scientists linked to the country’s controversial nuclear programme to be targeted in covert operations over the years. State-run media also revealed that just days earlier, Saber’s 17-year-old son was killed in a similar strike on their home in Tehran.
The strike took place as the international community closely monitored the volatile situation between Israel and Iran, which has intensified since Israel launched targeted assaults on nuclear and military sites deep within Iranian territory.
In a separate but related development, US President Donald Trump announced that a ceasefire was taking effect between the two long-standing adversaries. However, no official confirmation has yet been provided by Tehran or Tel Aviv on whether a truce has been formally agreed upon or implemented.
As the situation unfolds, the global diplomatic community remains on edge, with renewed concerns over nuclear escalation, regional stability, and civilian safety in the conflict-hit zones.
