Mexico City, Jun 26: A tragic mass shooting rocked the city of Irapuato in Mexico’s violence-stricken Guanajuato state late Tuesday night, claiming the lives of at least 12 people and leaving over 20 others wounded. The horrifying incident unfolded during a religious celebration honouring St John the Baptist.
According to local authorities, the joyous atmosphere of the event turned into a scene of terror when a group of armed assailants opened fire indiscriminately on the revelers, who were seen dancing and enjoying the street festivities. Several distressing videos, widely circulated on social media platforms, captured the chaotic moments as people screamed and scrambled for safety amidst the gunfire.

Rodolfo Gómez Cervantes, an official from Irapuato, confirmed in a press briefing held on Wednesday that the death toll had risen to 12 and the condition of many of the injured remains critical.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, reacting to the gruesome event, expressed deep sorrow and stated that a thorough investigation is underway to bring the perpetrators to justice.
This attack comes barely a month after a similar mass shooting at a religious event in San Bartolo de Berrios, also in Guanajuato, where seven lives were lost.
Once known for its colonial charm and agricultural productivity, Guanajuato has sadly become one of Mexico’s most violent regions due to the escalating turf war between rival organised crime groups. In a staggering statistic, the state recorded 1,435 homicides in the first five months of 2025—more than double that of any other state in the country.
The continuous wave of violence has raised serious concerns among civil society groups, with calls growing louder for stringent action and community protection measures.
