Jamkhandi municipality fines Rs 20,000 per donkey to curb nuisance

Bagalkot, June 26: In an unusual but decisive move, the Jamkhandi municipal council in Bagalkot district has begun rounding up donkeys that have been causing widespread public nuisance in the town. The civic body has not only detained the animals but also imposed a hefty fine of Rs 20,000 per donkey on their owners for their release.

Over the past several days, stray donkeys had become a major source of disruption across Jamkhandi. They frequently obstructed pedestrians and vehicles, created chaos by running across roads, attacked passersby, fed on food items from market stalls, and even lay or stood on roads, causing traffic congestion.

Frustrated by the persistent trouble, traffic police and residents had been trying to shoo the animals away. Numerous complaints were lodged with the municipality by both citizens and the police department. The issue was even raised during a recent municipal council meeting.

Responding to the complaints, municipal staff have now captured several stray donkeys found wandering around key areas of the city. The animals have been temporarily housed in the outskirts of Daddi.

Despite prior warnings issued to the owners last week, no corrective action was taken. Municipal commissioner Jyothi Girish stated that the civic body has now taken legal action. “Owners who want to reclaim their donkeys must pay a penalty of Rs 20,000 per animal. If not, the donkeys will be permanently relocated to remote areas outside the city,” she warned.

The public has welcomed the move, with many appreciating the municipality’s efforts to maintain cleanliness and ensure public safety. Citizens have urged the authorities to continue such proactive steps regularly.
