Riyadh, Jul 20: Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’, passed away on Saturday, July 19, at the age of 36 after spending nearly two decades in a coma.

His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, confirmed the news on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), writing, “O reassured soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], and enter My Paradise… With hearts believing in Allah’s will and decree, and with deep sorrow, we mourn our beloved son.”

Prince Alwaleed had been in a coma since 2005 following a severe car accident while studying at a military academy in London. A brain hemorrhage during subsequent surgery left him unresponsive. Despite the prognosis, his father refused to take him off life support, holding out hope for recovery.

Throughout the years, Prince Khaled regularly shared emotional updates and prayers for his son, especially during Ramadan and Eid. Just last month, during Eid al-Adha, he visited Alwaleed along with his other sons and publicly pleaded for his recovery.

Prince Alwaleed spent most of his time under medical care at King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh. The royal family brought in specialists from around the world in hopes of reviving him, though he remained in a vegetative state.

Funeral prayers for Prince Alwaleed will be held on Sunday, July 20. For men, prayers will take place after Asr at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. The service for women will be held after Dhuhr at King Faisal Specialist Hospital.

Condolences will be received from July 20 to July 22 at Prince Alwaleed bin Talal’s Palace in the Al-Fakhriyah district—men after Asr and women after Maghrib prayers.
