Singapore, Jul 30: American swimmer Katie Ledecky once again asserted her dominance in long-distance swimming by clinching gold in the 1,500m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships held on Tuesday.
Ledecky clocked 15:26.44 to finish well ahead of Italy’s Simona Quadarella, who secured silver with a European record time of 15:31.79. Australia’s Lani Pallister won the bronze with a timing of 15:41.18.
Ledecky, who was ahead of her world-record pace up to the 1,250m mark, said she aimed to start fast yet comfortably. She expressed satisfaction with her performance, calling the 1,500m freestyle a special race in her career.
This marks Ledecky’s 22nd gold medal at the world championships and her 28th overall. It was also her second medal in the ongoing competition, following a bronze in the 400m freestyle.
The United States team, despite battling an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis from a training camp in Thailand, managed to win one gold and three silver medals in Tuesday’s finals.
