Udupi, Aug 2: Udupi district has emerged as the region with the highest rainfall in Karnataka, not just for July 2025 but also cumulatively for the year so far. Following a similar trend in June, the district has once again registered top rainfall figures, according to data released by the District Disaster Management Centre at the deputy commissioner’s office, Manipal.

From July 1 to 31, Udupi district received a total of 1,626 mm of rainfall, 12% higher than the average rainfall of 1,448 mm for the month. Although this marks a significant increase over the norm, it's lower compared to last year's July rainfall of 2,047 mm — a 41% excess — indicating a drop of 421 mm this year.

Interestingly, despite the district-wide increase, the usually high-rainfall areas in the Western Ghats, like Karkala and Hebri taluks, recorded a shortfall. Karkala taluk received 1,448 mm of rain against an average of 1,503 mm (1% deficit), while Hebri saw 1,748 mm compared to an average of 1,927 mm (9% deficit).

Here’s a taluk-wise breakdown for July 2025:

Kundapur: Received 1,699 mm (44% higher than average 1,179 mm)

Udupi: Received 1,424 mm (17% higher than average 1,214 mm)

Byndoor: Received 1,739 mm (25% higher than average 1,389 mm)

Brahmavar: Received 1,503 mm (18% higher than average 1,271 mm)

Kapu: Received 1,366 mm (18% higher than average 1,153 mm)

35% excess rainfall from January to July 2025

From January 1 to July 31, Udupi district has witnessed 3,727 mm of cumulative rainfall, which is 35% above the average of 2,754 mm. In comparison, the district recorded only 19% excess rainfall during the same period in 2024, when the total rainfall stood at 3,278 mm.

Taluk-wise cumulative data from January to July 2025:

Karkala: 3,793 mm received against 2,773 mm average (37% excess)

Kundapur: 3,658 mm received against 2,370 mm average (54% excess)

Udupi: 3,422 mm received against 2,460 mm average (39% excess)

Byndoor: 3,850 mm received against 2,746 mm average (40% excess)

Brahmavar: 3,502 mm received against 2,491 mm average (41% excess)

Kapu: 3,367 mm received against 2,391 mm average (41% excess)

Hebri: 3,985 mm received against 3,445 mm average (16% excess)

With consistent rainfall throughout the monsoon months, Udupi continues to dominate Karnataka’s rainfall charts for 2025, reflecting both geographical advantage and climate variability across taluks.
