Arteta hails Gyokeres after debut goal, warns rivals of his threat

London, Aug 10: Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has sent a clear message to Premier League defenders: underestimate Viktor Gyokeres at your own risk. The Gunners’ big summer signing opened his account with a goal in a commanding 3-0 pre-season win over Athletic Club, alongside strikes from Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz.

The victory wrapped up Arsenal’s preparations for the season ahead of their high-stakes Premier League opener against Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 17.

Speaking after the match, Arteta praised Gyokeres' instincts and movement in the box, warning that leaving the Swedish striker in a one-on-one situation could be costly.

“If you leave him one vs one, he’ll destroy you,” said Arteta. “He reads the game, times his runs, and knows where the ball will land — it's not luck, it’s his instinct and ability.”

Gyokeres arrives in North London after a prolific spell at Sporting, where he won back-to-back league titles and was top scorer in both campaigns. He also boasts an impressive international record, netting 12 goals in his last 17 games for Sweden.

Arteta also commented on Kai Havertz's role in the squad amid ongoing debate about his place in the starting XI. He praised the German’s versatility and chemistry with Gyokeres, saying it gives Arsenal valuable tactical flexibility.

“They can play together. Kai’s ability to operate in multiple roles elevates our squad depth and goal threat,” Arteta noted.

With their new No. 9 already making an impact, Arsenal appear ready for the season — and Arteta’s message is clear: Gyokeres is just getting started.
