Kolkata, Aug 12: In a dramatic incident on Thursday, three women attempted to self-immolate at a main entrance of the Calcutta High Court. Security personnel, however, quickly intervened and prevented the suicide attempts. The women, identified as Purnima Halder, Sutishna Sapui, and Bandana Nashkar, all from the Bishnupur Police Station area in South 24 Parganas, were seen by police pouring kerosene on themselves. Purnima Halder was the first to douse herself in the fuel.
The trio was immediately taken to S.S.K.M. Medical College & Hospital for medical attention and are now being questioned by police. During the initial interrogation, they claimed their actions were driven by fear that their names would be removed from the voter list following the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.

However, officials are treating this explanation with skepticism, as the SIR process has not yet begun in the state. The ruling Trinamool Congress has been vocal in its opposition to the SIR, with party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee stating that the process is only acceptable if the current Parliament is dissolved, arguing that if voter lists are flawed, the last Lok Sabha elections were invalid.
