Mangalore, Feb 3: One must keep acquiring knowledge throughout one's life, as learning is a continuous process, said former Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde, while speaking at the inaugural ceremony of 'Medicine Update - 2012' at Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) here on Friday February 3.
The national conference was organized by FMMC to commemorate 20 years of post graduate medical education.
On the state of medical profession at present, he said that students need to concentrate more on rural areas, which are lacking in healthcare facilities. Both medical professionals and the government had failed to focus enough on healthcare in backward areas of the country, he added.
On the raging debate over the negligence and commercialism of the medical profession, he said that even research in medicine is being done based on its commercial feasibility, which has in turn led to a lowering of its quality. He lamented that the evil of corruption had invaded the medical field too, especially in government set-ups.
Tata Memorial Cancer Institute, Mumbai director Dr Anil D’Cruz emphasized on the role of research in the field of medicine, and also expressed concerns over the diagnosis and the treatment given by some of the specialist doctors who do not keep themselves updates on the latest discoveries in the medical field.
Dr Kedila Sundara Bhat and Dr Narasimha Hegde, professors of medicine, were felicitated for their 25 years of service at Fr Muller Charitable Institutions.
Among those present were Father Muller Institutes director Fr Patrick Rodrigues, administrators Fr Denis D'Sa and Fr Arun Coelho, FMMC dean Dr J P Alva and others.
