Mangaluru, Aug 15: “I initially had plans to give up, but I reminded myself that no gain comes without pain. Our freedom fighters must have faced countless moments of despair and discouragement. Yet, with the vision of a free India in their hearts, they pressed on. Because of their sacrifice, we today breathe the air of freedom.”
These heartfelt words from Remona Evette Pereira, the “Gold Girl” of Mangaluru, set the tone for the 79th Independence Day celebrations at the Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte. This year’s event carried a special distinction as the world record holder was invited as chief guest to hoist the tricolour in the presence of clergy, devotees, and well-wishers.

The solemn flag hoisting was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, filling the shrine premises with patriotic fervour. Pereira, who achieved a 170-hour Bharatanatyam marathon recognised by the Golden Book of World Records, England, dedicated her record to the nation, drawing a parallel between her artistic perseverance and the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.
Following her address, the Shrine community honoured her for her remarkable achievement. Fr Stifan Perera, director of the Shrine, read the Letter of Honour and presented her with a miraculous statue of the Infant Jesus. Fr Melvin D’Cunha, superior of St Joseph’s Monastery, draped her with a shawl, while Fr Ivan D’Souza, editor of Naman Ballok Jezu, crowned her with the traditional Mysuru Peta. Fr Gregory D’Souza completed the tribute with a bouquet of flowers.
The honour extended to her mother, Gladis Pereira, who was felicitated with flowers for her support and encouragement.
A large gathering of devotees, cultural enthusiasts, and well-wishers attended the celebration, which blended national pride with artistic glory - paying homage to India’s freedom fighters while showcasing the richness of the nation’s cultural heritage.
