New Delhi, Aug 20: In a shocking security breach, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during a public interaction programme at her residence on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, a man in his 40s, posing as a complainant during the weekly Jansunwai, suddenly attacked the Chief Minister when he approached her with some papers. Security personnel overpowered him on the spot and handed him over to the police. He has been identified as Rajesh Sakaria, a native of Rajkot, Gujarat.

The Chief Minister was rushed to hospital for medical examination. Top officers of Delhi Police reached her residence immediately and secured the premises.

Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana confirmed the incident, saying, “One person present at the meeting attacked the Chief Minister. Doctors are examining her condition. We strongly condemn the attack and demand a probe into whether it was politically motivated.”

Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa alleged that political rivals were unable to tolerate the Chief Minister’s popularity and work at the grassroots. “There appears to be a conspiracy behind this assault. The truth must come out,” he said.

Opposition AAP leader and former minister Atishi also condemned the incident. “The attack on Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democracy, there is space for protest, but never for violence. We hope Delhi Police takes strict action and that the Chief Minister is safe,” she said.

Delhi Police Commissioner SBK Singh has ordered a high-level inquiry into the breach and is personally monitoring the investigation.
