Mangalore, Feb 4: As the terms of both city mayor and deputy mayor will come to an end during this month, aspirants within BJP have begun efforts in earnest to get themselves elevated to these positions. The next session of the city corporation will be presided over by the newly elected mayor.

The state government is yet to announce the reservation criteria for the election. A number of corporators including Tilakraj, Shanta R, Shakeela Kava and Rupa D Bangera are said to be interested in becoming the next mayor.

The BJP is under the compulsion of making a clever choice, as this is the last of the terms of the five-year tenure of BJP in the city corporation. It has to choose an able leader who can provide a much-needed thrust to the party’s fortunes at the last minute during the next election.

BJP, which came to power for the first time in 2007 after Congress ruled the city corporation for four consecutive terms since 1984, plans to rely on development plank to improve its fortunes, as it could get special grant of Rs 100 crore for the city from the Chief Minister, and list of project for the next phase of Rs 100 crore is in the pipeline.
