New Delhi, Aug 20: Pandemonium erupted in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday when Opposition MPs, primarily from the Trinamool Congress, tore up and threw copies of three significant bills at Union Home Minister Amit Shah as he was introducing them. The incident has been widely condemned by the BJP, which labeled it a "shameful act" and a disgrace to parliamentary decorum.
BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut stated the Opposition had "crossed all limits," recounting how members tried to snatch the minister's microphone and even threw stones, though the BJP remained patient. Similarly, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi called the behavior "truly unfortunate," accusing women MPs and Trinamool members of attempting to attack the Home Minister. She asserted that this was not a form of dissent but a direct attack.

Echoing these sentiments, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj described the events as "the murder of democracy." She specifically called out a female Trinamool Congress MP for trying to grab the microphone and tearing up papers, stating that such actions have embarrassed the public and the democratic process itself. BJP leader Annpurna Devi also joined the condemnation, noting that the entire country was watching the "extremely inappropriate" behavior, particularly from senior MPs. She refuted the Opposition's claim that ruling party members had attacked them, clarifying that they were only standing their ground.
The uproar began as Amit Shah presented three key pieces of legislation: the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The first bill, which would automatically remove ministers facing serious criminal or corruption charges, was a primary point of contention. Amidst the chaos and shouting, Amit Shah suggested the bills be sent to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further scrutiny.
