Karnataka Includes Sex Education in School Curricula

Bangalore, Feb 7 (DHNS): The State government has decided to include sex education in school curricula from the next academic year.

A 16-hour manual on elements of sex education, sensitising students about issues related to adolescence, sexually transmitted diseases, awareness about Aids and other issues will be discussed as part of the programme in schools. A special training programme will be conducted for teachers to equip them to implement the programme effectively, according to officials of the Department of State Education, Research and Training.

The authorities concerned have approved the manual. To begin with, the programme will be implemented in high schools.  A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Human Resources Development, which looked into the Sexual Offences Bill, had suggested in 2011 that an education module on sex education be included in school education to sensitise vulnerable children about sexual offences.  In 2009, a parliamentary committee had recommended that sex education be scrapped from school education. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh were also against sex education in schools.

Amid mixed responses to the issue, Karnataka’s decision comes as a bold step. The move has brought a sigh of relief to both teachers and parents, considering the rise in the number of child sexual abuse cases.

Teachers and students alike have welcomed the State government’s decision. “Talking about sex is considered a taboo in our society. Students seldom approach teachers in the face of any adolescent problems, as they fear being reprimanded,” said Principal of St Patrick’s Boys’ High School Thomas Joseph.

He described the State government’s move as a step in the right direction. He was happy that sex education will be part of the curricula from now on.

Class X students of St Patrick's Boys' High School felt that they did need someone to discuss adolescent-related issues. However, they were sceptic about the outcome of such an initiative. “We would be comfortable discussing the issue with a male teacher. But teachers are shy to speak about this,” say the students.

Boys say that their source for learning about reproduction and gender-related issues was never the biology textbook. Peer discussions and internet are their sources of information. The idea of discussing with parents hasn't crossed their minds.  Students who have been able to discuss with elders about the issues bothering them feel more secure about it. “Scientific details in biology textbook do not suffice. It is more about dealing with emotions,” says a student of St Joseph's High School. His school has a counsellor. “Be it infatuation or any other problem, we go to our teacher who will counsel us,” says the class XI student.

The word 'sex education' attracts lot of attention but word ' sexuality education' has hardly any takers. It is a shame on our education system and experts to educate children only on sex without having an understanding on the need for life skills education. Why only sex education?
Who will impart life skills to children?
The immediate need is that there must be a life skills education and sex education could be a small part of it. Children need to be given exposure on living skills as well as market driven soft skills also.

Are there competent teachers to take up life skills education as well as this glorified sex education is a fundamental question that governemnt has to answer as many teachers do not even complete the schools syllabus as well as have no exposure to life skills.

Good move by govt I hope every one will welcome it. Students should be aware of unsafe sex so that they may not ruin their life. DVS is great unlike BSY who wasted 3 yrs doing corruption n without doing any developmental work.

It is a good move, the adolescent need proper, scientific answers to their growing up problem. Boys or girls should their own body and opposite. They should know what is normal and what is not. The counseloar should be properly briefed.
India had more advanced than the west on sexual functions. India that prodused Kamasuthra and most of our old temples depict sexual messages for people to know sex is not something to be hidden or felt shy of but only natural.

Good move and highly commended. Should have done so long ago. Though these days, every adolescent and teenager learns everything about sex from the Internet and web sites, whereas earlier times, for sex education, they had to entirely depend upon their older siblings, friends and their parents. The parents, of course, because of it being a taboo topic, were reluctant or not comfortable to pass on such education to their children.

More than any other subject, the
subject of "sex topics" are discussed among the peers, and
a good percentage of the discussion
will be based on false information.
So, it is a step in the right
    direction to teach the students
    about different details pertaining
to this hidden subject from the
    school curriculum. The students
can't ask any question about sex
    topics to their parents, because
    of the great "sin signboard"
    attached to it, so teaching
that at schools is the best way.

A very welcoming move by the state. this is essential factor to be discussed at the adolescent level, this can reduce the myths and misconception an adolescent has, my concern here is the process of implementation in the grassroot level, the attitude of various stakeholders in accepting this move will make a difference.

NOW THIS WILL BE A PROBLEM FOR A FEW FANATICALLY MOTIVATED RELIGIOUS LEADERS. PLEASE BE CAREFUL, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT LIKE 'SEX' VALENTINES DAY CELEBRATION THEY CANNOT SEE BOY AND GIRL TOGETHER THEY CANNOT TOLERATE LOVE-MARRIAGES, AND THEY CANNOT CERTAINLY TOLERATE SEX EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS. THIS WILL BE ANOTHER POINT FOR THEM TO GO IN PROCESSIONS AND YATRAS AND CONDEMN SEX EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS. SEX IS BAD ACCORDING TO THEM. JAI HOOOO...................JAI HOO..............................
