Kasargod, Feb 7: “The service of city-based Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangh in promoting India’s ancient art of puppetry is indeed commendable,” said Professor Alison East, folk art scholar, Oteco University, New Zealand.

Addressing media persons after visiting Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangh on Sunday February 5, Professor East marveled at the puppetry show which depicted different episodes of Indian mythology.

‘Folkland’ chairman V Jayarajan led the New Zealand folk art scholars to Kasargod.

Oteco University dance students Jasmin, Lih Carol, Karina, Ella, Christine, Heerlen, and Rachael were present in the group.

Professor East is leading the study group to undertake an extensive study on ‘Kalaripayat’, ‘Theyyam’, tribal dance, ‘Mohiniyattam’, ‘Kathakali’, ‘Bharatanatyam’, ‘Margomkali’, ‘Thiruvathirakali’, and other traditional dances of Kerala.

Gopalakrishna Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangh director K V Ramesh, honorary president Girija Venkatakrishnayya, puppetry artistes K V Tirumalesh, K V Sudarshan, Kumaraswamy, and Chandrashekar explained about their art form.

Jayarajan is engaged in the study of Indian folk art and has created a global interest. He is associated with Yakshagana Bombeyata Sangh promoter K V Ramesh who is engaged in popularizing ‘Tenkutittu’ style of Yakshagana. The study groups of New Zealand were happy to witness Yakshagana in its motherland.
