Barkurian community in UAE celebrates Monthi Fest with traditional fervour

Media Release

Abu Dhabi, Sep 22: Canara Catholic families from Barkur transformed a corner of Abu Dhabi into coastal Karnataka on September 8, celebrating Monthi Fest, the feast honouring the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Hosted at Sharmila and Terence Lewis's residence, the gathering demonstrated how immigrant communities maintain cultural identity while embracing their new homeland. "Distance has only strengthened our connection to our roots," noted Peter Menezes, Leader of the EB family.

The celebration blended traditional rituals with modern adaptations. While ceremonial flower offerings to Mother Mary remained central, organizers included digital presentations on the festival's history to engage UAE-born children.

"We are creating new traditions that honour both our heritage and our present home," explained the host family.

The event followed traditional customs with Thelma D'Almeida welcoming guests and Terence Lewis leading prayers. Key moments included flower offerings to the Virgin Mary and sharing milk sweetened with 'Novem.' The celebration concluded with food blessings, communal lunch (Nove Jevan), and social activities including Housie Housie and Baila.

Community members including Peter Menezes, Thelma and Walter D'Almeida, Allen Crasta, Jennifer and Anish Dias, and Sunny Lewis contributed to the event's success.

The annual gathering serves as both religious observance and cultural bridge, connecting UAE-raised children to their ancestral roots. As the UAE continues embracing cultural diversity, celebrations like Monthi Fest demonstrate how immigrant communities preserve traditions while contributing to their adopted homeland's multicultural fabric.
