Pressure mounts to reinstate Mangaluru–Muscat direct flight as public outcry grows

Mangaluru, Oct 13: Public demand is intensifying for the reinstatement of the Mangaluru–Muscat direct flight service, which was suspended by Air India Express (AIE) around three months ago. Calls from elected representatives and expatriate groups are growing louder, urging the Union government to intervene and restore the vital air link.

Udupi–Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary has formally appealed to Union civil aviation minister K Ram Mohan Naidu to take immediate action to resume the service. His request follows a similar appeal made earlier by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta. Additionally, members of the expatriate community from coastal Karnataka residing in Oman have strongly backed the demand.

The now-defunct route was operated by AIE with four weekly flights, and was suspended in mid-July.

In a letter dated October 8, addressed to the minister, Poojary said he had received a memorandum from the Karnataka Janapada Parishath, Muscat – Oman chapter, expressing serious concern over the suspension. The disruption, he noted, has caused considerable inconvenience to passengers—particularly senior citizens, students, and working professionals from Mangaluru, Udupi, Kasaragod, and nearby regions.

“This route has been a vital link connecting a large section of the Indian community living in Oman to their native. Its discontinuation has led to longer travel routes via Bengaluru, Mumbai, or Kannur, resulting in increased costs and travel hardships,” Poojary wrote.

“In view of the difficulties faced by the public, I kindly request your good office to examine the feasibility of reinstating the Muscat–Mangaluru direct flight service, even with limited weekly operations initially,” the MP urged.

Capt Brijesh Chowta had raised the issue in an earlier letter dated September 18, where he also pressed the ministry for immediate corrective action.

“Close to 50,000 expatriates from the coastal Karnataka region work in Oman, engaged in both skilled and unskilled jobs. The Mangaluru–Muscat route has served as a vital and uninterrupted lifeline, enabling them to travel directly to their homeland without the additional financial and physical burden of transiting through Bengaluru, Kannur, or Mumbai airports,” Capt Chowta stated.

He stressed that the sudden suspension of the service—without consultation or adequate explanation—has had a direct emotional and economic impact on the community.

“Its abrupt suspension, without prior consultation or proper explanation, has left many families in distress,” he added.

“Given the seriousness of this issue, I sincerely request you to provide necessary directions to the respective Ministry officials and Air India Express management to reconsider and revoke the suspension of the Mangaluru–Muscat flights,” Capt. Chowta wrote in his appeal.

Meanwhile, the expatriate Kannadiga community in Oman continues to express concern, highlighting that the route had become a crucial cultural and logistical link between the Gulf nation and Coastal Karnataka.

As of now, Air India Express has not released any official statement regarding the resumption of the service.

Airindia express suddenly suspended the service without any explanation, how is that possible?. Some serious problem might have cropped up. After Adani group acquired the airport it was expected more new flights would be introduced. Opposite of that is happening. Civil aviation ministry isn't allowing Oman Air or any other airlines to operate Muscat Mangalore flights. Oman Air is trying since many years,I have heard. Is there a problem between Advani and The airlines?. Mangalore airport isn't operating under udan scheme, all the frees are higher than Kannur, calicut etc. Complaints regarding this is were being aired long before Adani took over. They could have reduced the flights to at least one flight a week or raised flight tariffs but complete cessation is a slap on the face of coastal citizens . How can such an uncivilized thing can even happen in a civilized society?. Can we not boycott?. The airport and the airlines?.

At least it will be great if Indigo can start this weekly service. I think AIX is not interested in this route and busy in other routes since the merger. so other airlines should take this opportunity to discover this potential route.

We want other airlines to operate on Dubai Mangaluru Sector. Because these express and Indigo worst Airlines. Their staff also acting like they own us. We really fedup with these Airlines. Govt Must Allow Air Arabia and Flydubai to operate on these Routes. Then only these (Express and Indigo) local Ksrtc bus type Airlines will learn a Lesson.

Firstly why target Air India? Air India is not a Government airline and they will look for their profits like any other private airline. India boasts of one of largest aviation industry and there are many airlines operating. So the people demanding flights to Muscat should also ask other airlines to operate flights on this sector.

Air India Express looks only into their business profitability and diverting least attention to public apathy and inconvenience caused by air fare and other difficulties to reach their destination via third airport. They can reduce the frequency or allow other Intl airlines to provide same service. Why monopoly ? Travel should not be subjected to Bosses order but should act as per public demand and convenience.

Never trust Air India Express. They seem more focused on making money than serving passengers. Even when seats are empty, they cancel flights citing “technical issues.” There have been multiple incidents where flights landed at different destinations without prior notice to passengers, causing major inconvenience. On the other hand, IndiGo is currently the most reliable option. They are punctual, dependable, and a great choice for last-minute travel plans.

It was shock to know the sudden discontinuation of direct flight. Now Realized the difficulties of via flight and muscateers travel either postponed or skipped. Reinstating the direct route make life easier, or look for alternative option like Salam Air/ oman air.

Instead we should demand for POC (Point of Call) status for Mangaluru airport. If this is granted foreign airlines can start operating from Mangaluru which means Emirates and all other Gulf and other region airlines can land and take off from Mangaluru. This will increase competition which means Air India, Indigo etc. also cannot neglect Mangaluru airport.
