Bangalore: 'Righteous Journalism Is Disappearing' - ICPA President

Media Release

Bangalore, Feb 15: The 18th national conference of journlists was held here recently. ICPA president Adolf Washington spoke at the occasion.

Addressing the participants at the ICPA's 18th national conference of journalists here recently, ICPA president Adolf Washington said, "We are discussing a topic 'Is Righteous journalism fading away' at a juncture when the media in India seems to be controlled by business houses that have self-interests that even decide what news people should read. The ridiculous headline that actor Abhishek Bachchan (actor Amithab Bachvhan's son) claiming that his two-year old child is 'obedient' is what is making news.  Are there not more serious stories that we can carry?" the president questioned.  He was addressing a packed audience of over 200 participants including ICPA delegates across the country including students of journalism from 14 colleges in the city.  He further added, "We are aware that editorials are written in favour for those who pay and video bytes are given to those who contribute to media establishments.  Shocklingly, owners of some TV channels have criminal cases against them."

"Journalists should do research on socio-economic issues to make their reporting relevant" Aolf Washington said.  Reporting on issues affecting the marginalised is the need of the day.  "Righteous journalists is not a dying tribe.  There are still journalists who courageously stand for Truth.  The weapon for journalists is not the pen.  It is truth that is the real weapon", he said.  Truthful journalists will always have an audience, he added.

The Indian Catholic Press Association will be celebrating its golden jubilee in 2013.
