Udupi, Nov 20: Sports Day was held at Mount Rosary English Medium School, Santhekatte.
The sports day was inaugurated by national-level Athlete Mark D’Costa. As an alumnus of the institution Mark D’Costa was felicitated on the occasion.
Mark D’Costa in his inaugural address, said, “During my school days, I was not a very disciplined student in the classroom. Even my academics were only average. But sports taught me discipline. The desire to achieve helped me remain committed to my sporting activities. This, in turn, contributed greatly to my achievements both in studies and sports. Life cannot be built on marks alone. A healthy body is essential for a healthy mind, and sports play a vital role in this.”




School correspondent Dr Roque D’Souza, who presided over the programme, said that if children get involved in their favourite sports from a young age, they can grow to become great sportspersons. “If India wants to become a world leader, young talents must shine in the field of sports. School sports days provide an excellent platform for this,” he added.
The assistant parish priest of the church, Fr Rohan, lit the sports torch, accompanied by taluk, district and state-level athletes.
Sports captain Manvitha led the oath-taking ceremony. Chief guest Mark D’Costa accepted the flag salute, released pigeons, and declared the sports meet open. The event began with an attractive march-past comprising 1,226 students in eight groups.
Senior teachers Alwin Danti, Anand, and Anita coordinated the programme. Students Karthik and Rania compered the event. Ishika welcomed the gathering, and Afra proposed the vote of thanks.
PTA president Irshad Begum, vice-president Ramesh Kundar, school administrative vice-president Luke D’Souza, alumni association president Anvita Tantri, secretary Nandan and others were present on the occasion.
The two-day sports meet concluded with the extinguishing of the sports torch.
