Udupi, Feb 20: Three young boys met watery grave in Kallugundi river near Kallu Ganapati Temple, Padumundu, near Brahmavar here on Monday February 20 evening.

The deceased have been identified as Kaushik (13), his brother Kartik (11) and their relative Gautam (12). Karthik and Gautam were students of Madhuvana Primary School, while Koushik was a student of Moodukeri School, Achlady.

Another boy, Sharat, who was with them, was able to swim to safety.

The four of them had come to the temple to offer puja. Thereafter, they took a walk along the banks of the river, when Kaushik accidentally slipped and fell into the water. Karthik and Gautam immediately rushed to his rescue, but they too met similar fate. Sharat also tried to rescue Kaushik, but sensing danger, swam back to the shore and rushed for help. But by the time he raised an alarm it was too late.

The river is located in a dense forest area and hence rescue efforts were delayed. The locals came to know of the incident only after Sharat started calling aloud for help.

Kaushik and Karthik were the only children of Thimmappa Poojary of Achlady, and Gautam was the son of Gopal Poojary and Bhagirati, who have two other children. They belong to the same family and both Thimmappa and Gopal work in the same hotel in Bangalore. The family is said to be poor, depending on Gopal and Thimappa's meagre earnings and the daily wages brought home by their wives.

A case has been registered in Kota police station.

It is sad to know that three young boys lost their lives in a drowning accident. May their soul rest in eternal peace. One family lost both their only two children. The other family lost one son. It is a tragic loss for both the families and our sympathy goes to them. This is a lesson for the other children to stay away from rivers and sea if you do not know swimming and it is a warning for the parents too.

It is a sad news.... Children do not understand the gravity of the situation. Risk is a thing every young ones to take, but only few can experience death and never venture again. We can not learn everything from our own mistakes..!!!??? It is better to learn few things from others mistakes also...!!!!! Who knows we may not be alive when we make a mistake and try to learn from that...!!
