New Delhi, Dec 15: Once considered a disease of older adults, colon cancer is increasingly being diagnosed in younger generations. Research indicates a concerning trend: millennials and people born in the 1990s face twice the risk of developing colon cancer compared with those born in 1950, according to a study published in the British Journal of Surgery (BJS).
Dr. Joseph Salhab, a board-certified gastroenterologist trained at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, highlighted five warning signs of colon cancer in a video shared on Instagram. “With colon cancer being found in people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s, it’s essential to be your own healthcare advocate and recognize the warning signs,” he emphasized.

Early detection is critical for effective treatment and better outcomes. Unfortunately, many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages because early symptoms are often overlooked or mistaken for less serious issues.
What Is Colon Cancer?
Colon cancer begins in the colon, the longest section of the large intestine. Most cases start as growths on the inner lining of the colon called polyps. Over time, some polyps can develop into cancer.
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2025, around 107,320 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S.—54,510 in men and 52,810 in women.
Key Symptoms of Colon Cancer to Watch For
1. Changes in Bowel Habits
Any sudden changes in bowel movements should not be ignored. New-onset diarrhea or constipation, or the need to strain more than usual, can indicate a blockage caused by polyps or cancer. Narrow or thin stools are another warning sign that requires medical attention.
2. Rectal Bleeding
Blood in the stool or on toilet paper, whether bright red or dark, is a serious symptom. While conditions like hemorrhoids can cause rectal bleeding, persistent or recurrent bleeding should be evaluated by a doctor.
3. Unexplained Weakness or Fatigue
Feeling unusually tired despite adequate rest may be dismissed as stress or a busy lifestyle, especially in younger adults. However, persistent fatigue can signal colon cancer and warrants medical assessment.
4. Cramping or Abdominal Pain
Persistent abdominal pain without an obvious cause is another symptom that should not be ignored. If discomfort continues over time, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.
5. Unintentional Weight Loss
Losing weight without changing diet or exercise habits is a red flag for many types of cancer, including colon cancer. Any unexplained weight loss should prompt a visit to your GP.
