Mumbai, Dec 30: Mumbai-based actor and dancer Malaika Arora has candidly spoken about the intense judgement and criticism she faced during and after her divorce from actor Arbaaz Khan, revealing that the backlash came not only from the public but also from close friends and family members.
In an interview with India Today, Malaika said her decision to end her marriage in 2017 was constantly questioned, with many scrutinising her personal choices. Despite the pressure, she said she has no regrets about prioritising her own happiness.

“I faced a lot of judgement and backlash, not just from the public, but even from my friends and family. I was questioned about all my choices at that point. But I am glad I stood by my decisions. I knew I needed to make that move in my life to be happy,” she said.
Malaika added that while people often question why personal happiness should come first, she was comfortable being on her own and taking charge of her life, even without knowing what the future held.
Clarifying her views on marriage, the actor said her failed marriage has not made her cynical about the institution. “I do believe in marriage, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s meant for me. If it happens, great, but I’m not seeking it. I’m very content with where I am,” she said, adding that she still believes in love and remains open to meaningful relationships.
Malaika and Arbaaz Khan, who were married from 1998 to 2017, share a son, Arhaan, aged 23. While Arbaaz recently tied the knot with stylist Shura Khan, Malaika has not remarried. She was previously in a high-profile relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor from 2016 to 2024.
The actor’s remarks have resonated with many, highlighting the societal pressures faced by women when they choose personal well-being over convention.
