Kundapur, Jan 6: A tragic incident was reported from Kalladi near Saibrakatte on Sunday, where a first-year PUC student allegedly ended his life by jumping into a farm pond, reportedly fearing that he would be reprimanded by his family after damaging a scooter.

The deceased has been identified as Vanshik (17), son of Manjunath Shettigar, an employee with the MESCOM department, and Soumya Shettigar. Vanshik was studying in the commerce stream at a college near Kundapur.

According to the details, a family programme was held on Sunday morning at the house of one of Manjunath Shettigar’s relatives in Karkala. As a result, a relative came to Vanshik’s residence at Saibrakatte, parked a scooter there, and proceeded to Karkala along with Manjunath Shettigar and other family members. At that time, Vanshik’s grandfather was the only person at home.

Taking the opportunity to learn how to ride, Vanshik reportedly took the scooter out. However, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to fall and sustain damage. Alarmed and fearing that his family would scold him, the boy is said to have thrown his mobile phone and helmet at the spot where the scooter fell and fled from the scene.

When the family returned after the programme and noticed that Vanshik had not come home even by afternoon, they began searching for him along with friends and neighbours. During the search, the scooter, mobile phone and helmet were found. Later, near a farm pond close to the house, Vanshik’s chappals and shirt were recovered. Upon inspecting the pond, his body was found.

Kota police were informed, and a case has been registered at the Kota police station. Police personnel visited the spot and conducted an inspection as part of the investigation.

Vanshik was the only son of Manjunath Shettigar and Soumya Shettigar and was described as a soft-natured boy. It is stated that the scooter had not suffered major damage and that his parents were not inclined towards imposing harsh punishment. Nevertheless, an impulsive decision led him to end his life.

The bereaved family, who had hoped he would be the guiding light of their home, has been plunged into deep grief following the untimely loss.
