Bengaluru, Jan 7: The Karnataka transport department has suspended a total of 5,947 driving licences (DLs) across the state in 2025, with Bengaluru city topping the list among the six transport divisions by recording 4,479 suspensions.
Officials said that 1,512 cases, including those related to over-speeding, rash and negligent driving, and other traffic violations, are still pending with various Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). With inspections intensified during the last Christmas holidays and New Year celebrations, the number of suspension cases are expected to rise further.

Out of the total suspensions, 4,735 driving licences were suspended for drunken driving.
The transport department can suspend a driving licence for a period ranging from three to six months. In some cases, inquiries are conducted, and further action is taken based on the driver’s explanation and reports submitted by the traffic police, officials said.
Between April and November 2025, a total of 5,947 driving licences were suspended across the state. Of these, 4,735 suspensions were related to drunk driving cases. Meanwhile, action is still awaited in 1,512 cases referred for licence suspension.
It was also stated that new vehicles are required to undergo pollution testing after one year.
